This book explores different national models of university systems, including their historical development. It examines major themes confronting higher education, such as globalization, the growth of regulatory states, markets and education as a tradable service, and new providers utilizing the latest information and communication technologies. It also looks at implications for traditional universities and national governments. MICHAEL GIBBONS is Director General of the Association of Commonwealth Universities; formerly Head of the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) at Sussex University; well-known writer on science policy and, particularly, influential concepts of Mode 1 and Mode 2 research. YONI RYAN is Associate Professor in Higher Education, and Deputy Director of the Centre for Learning and Teaching Support, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. Extensive experience in staff development and educational design and development in new technologies. Operational manager and lead author for the major Australian government commissioned report, 'The Business of Borderless Education' (2001).
