In order to make an urban space function there has to be a strong identity behind it, be it at a neighbourhood, city, regional or national scale. It is important to have a cosmopolitan identity, mixing the local and the global, and taking into account the importance of each city’s heritage. All successful cities, considered from a multi-functional and integrated point of view, have a strong sense of identity and a lot of that has to do with ‘place making’ and making good use of their heritage and contemporary cultural activities, in one way or another. Building a new identity is not just about recovering the past or a city’s heritage, but it is, to an extent, in determining the city’s future.
