The textbook "Temporomandibular Joint Function and Dysfunction" which was published in 1979 provided a synthesis of scientific knowledge as a basis for better understanding of disorders of this joint. In the past decade, research in this area has yielded much new information and a new edition of this text became desirable.

The new title, "Temporomandibular Joint and Masticatory Muscle Disorders", reflects current research, educational and clinical practice convictions which are an outgrowth of documented evidence in the field. It is co-edited by the editors of the original publication, Zarb and Carlsson, together with two new editors. Furthermore a number of new contributors have been invited to provide chapters in their areas of expertise.
